How can we help? NNZ Volunteers share their story on International Volunteers Day

One billion people volunteer around the world, all giving their time and skills to improve communities. Today, 5 December, the United Nations have dedicated an International Volunteer Day to honour these generous people. We want to celebrate the incredible volunteers we have in Netball in New Zealand and talk to some volunteers who were recently awarded Netball New Zealand Volunteers of the year.

This year Netball New Zealand bestowed four volunteers with the Netball New Zealand Volunteer Award. The award was given to people who displayed immense dedication to the sport, with care and respect for the game. As part of the award Trudy Cochrane (Coach of the Year), Kathi Scott (Official of the Year), Wayne Hawker (Administrator of the Year) and Monique Cox-Timmer (Youth of the Year) were all given an exclusive trip to Christchurch for the second Constellation Cup battle between the Silver Ferns and Australian Diamonds.

Prior to the game, the volunteers received a private tour throughout Horncastle Arena with a behind the scenes look into the game plan with Silver Ferns coach Janine Southby, and were hosted at the game.

This trip was an opportunity to not only thank these volunteers for their time and care towards Netball but to introduce them to other hard working, passionate volunteers from around the country.

Official of the Year, Kathi Scott, stated how great it was to be with other volunteers who loved being Netball as much as she did "we all [shared] the same vision… how can we help?”

“It was great to meet up with other volunteers from around the country to hear what they do and the time that they give to Netball” says Administrator of the Year, Wayne Hawker.

Youth of the Year, Monique Cox-Timmer, reiterated them both and said that she loved being involved at a grassroots level, to help develop the proper skills of the game.

Coach of the Year, Trudy Cochrane added how lovely it was to know “that there were so many others out there just like me- passionate about what they do and giving their best to the sport that they love!”

Without dedicated people, like these awarded volunteers, there would be no game.

Thank you to all the volunteers who have taken the time to support Netball in New Zealand.
