NetballSmart is the official injury prevention programme of Netball New Zealand

The 9 Principles

NetballSmart is an evidence based framework made up of nine principles. It helps improve your performance in sport by preventing injuries.

  • One

    Player Profile

Player profiling pinpoints strengths and weaknesses. It allows coaches to design their strategies around players’ skills and abilities.
  • Two

    Physical Conditioning

Prepares the athletes’ body for sport and enhances performance. This includes warm up, cool down, flexibility, strength, endurance and power.
  • Three

    Psychology

Prepares the athletes’ body for sport and enhances performance. This includes warm up, cool down, flexibility, strength, endurance and power.
  • Four

    Skill & Technique

Developing a player’s skill and technique allows them to compete and enjoy their sport.
  • Five

    Food & Fluid

Players need to eat and drink right to play right. Use food and drink to maintain high energy levels and stay hydrated.
  • Six

    Player Wear

Use the right gear for your type of sport. Consider sports requirements and game rules when planning player kits.
  • Seven

    Athlete Environment

Athletes need a safe and fair environment when they do sport or physical activity. This includes weather, surfaces, equipment, fair play and behaviour.
  • Eight

    Injuries

Identify, assess and report injuries early. This helps reduce the risk of injuries so that players’ performance can be maintained and improved.
  • Nine

    Target Populations

Consider the needs of special populations, e.g. Disabled, child adolescent, or ageing athletes, to help improve performance and reduce their injury risk.
