All Stars team named to face Silver Ferns

The Netball New Zealand National Selectors Panel has named a 14-strong All Stars team to contest the Cadbury Netball Series in Auckland next month.

The invitational team will play matches against the Silver Ferns, New Zealand Men’s Invitational team and the Fiji Pearls at the Pulman Arena from June 26-29.

Four players come from ANZ Premiership minor premiers Te Wānanga o Raukawa Pulse, including Aliyah Dunn, Whitney Souness, Claire Kersten and Sulu Fitzpatrick.

It also includes The Good Oil Tactix defender Temalisi Fakahokotau who has missed the ANZ Premiership season due to a knee injury.

The former Silver Fern suffered a ruptured ACL in her right knee last November but had recently returned to the training court and her return to play will be managed carefully.

Her inclusion in the All Stars team is still reliant on receiving a medical clearance for the four-day series.

The All Stars team was selected by National Selectors Panel (NSP) including Silver Ferns Head coach Noeline Taurua, Adrianne Hayes, Jo Morrison and Debbie Fuller.

Convenor of Selectors Adrianne Hayes said the team provides the strongest possible opposition to help prepare the Silver Ferns for the Vitality Netball World Cup 2019.

“We feel there is a mix of strengths and styles in the All Stars team to offer a true test against all of the sides involved in the Cadbury Netball Series. Although these players weren't selected for the Netball World Cup, they are the future of the Silver Ferns,” she said.

“The Cadbury Netball Series provides the Silver Ferns with the best preparation leading into Netball World Cup. It also provides our emerging stars with international experience and an opportunity to compete at the highest level.”

Hayes said Waikato-BOP Magic defender Kelly Jury, who missed much of the 2018 season due to a dislocated shoulder, was not considered for the Series as she was investigating further surgery.

Meanwhile, four of the All Stars team have also been confirmed as non-travelling reserves for the Netball World Cup in England.

Defenders Sulu Fitzpatrick and Michaela Sokolich-Beatson, along with Whitney Souness and Maia Wilson will travel with the Silver Ferns to the June 16-21 camp on the Sunshine Coast in Australia as part of their Vitality Netball World Cup preparations.
